INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Colts lost their third straight game on Sunday, falling on the road to the Minnesota Vikings, 16-10.
The Colts had the lead at halftime, but were held scoreless in the second half.
WISH-TV/WRTV Colts Insider Kevin Bowen said the Colts had a “golden opportunity” to get the win against the undefeated Vikings.
“You had a halftime lead,” Bowen said. “You had a fourth quarter lead and just the inability to finish and really the guy that’s probably been your best player all season, Spencer Shrader missing those two field goals. Got to get more out of your passing offense. But at some point this season, when you lose to Tennessee at home, you got to steal one of these on the road. Yesterday was a great opportunity.”
Bowen has covered the Colts for 16 years and is a radio host for 107.5 The Fan, hosting “The Fan Morning Show.”
Bowen pointed out that the Colts were finally able to get the run game going, as they rushed for 154 yards on 4.7 yards per carry.
But with the Colts losing at home to the Titans the week before, Bowen said they needed to be able to go on the road and beat a team that is better than them. He broke down what he saw from Colts head coach Shane Steichen on Sunday, and what has been a consistent concern throughout his time in Indianapolis.
“That’s probably been the biggest bugaboo, really, in the Steichen era, particularly away from home, particularly when there’s an uptick in competition,” Bowen said. “They’re competitive. They’re right there. You saw it at Kansas City earlier this season, but when the game is on the line, the inability to close, the inability to find a way to win to steal that Carlie Irsay-Gordon mantra, unfortunately too often, it’s really been find a way to lose.”
The Colts will look to snap the losing streak on Sunday on the road against the Jacksonville Jaguars, where the Colts have not won since 2014.
“If this season is going to have anything to look forward to here in the second half of the year, Sunday is a must,” Bowen said. “I don’t say that lightly. I get it’s still the month of October but just look at the standings, you cannot lose this game… This is one you have to have or else I think you start hammering that nail in the coffin of the Colts season.”
Kickoff against the Jaguars is scheduled for 1 p.m.
